Gabe,Its nice to know that the good Doc is safe.
What you may or may not know is that the infrastructure in the US is falling
apart. New Orleans, which just missed Harvey by a whisker, has pumps that work
or do not work - depending on what day of the week it is.
Houston needed a thorough reorganization of its levy system and the person who
prepared the master plan said that there simply is no state money to accomplish
it. The Mayor of Houston now says that it will take a few years for the city to
get back on its feet again.
A few years ago, I was reading a paper about the forthcoming climate refugees.
At the time, the day seemed far, far away. Not anymore. That day has arrived.
People from Houston are leaving and are looking to relocate. Those who work in
the service industry do not get paid if they do not show up at work or if the
place of work is closed.
These people now have no income, have most probably lost their vehicle in the
floods and - if they live in the unlucky side of town - have their homes
flooded too. Some of them are already arriving in accommodations set up in
other parts of Texas. These people have no reason to return to a place with
closed down businesses and less economic activity.
Harvey does plan to return - for round two. If it does, it will be another blow
to a weakened Houston infrastructure. On the other hand, Harvey may pick a
fight with New Orleans. If that is the case, those who did not pack and leave
after Katrina, may leave for good before Harvey arrives.
MervynBTW, remember the character who promised to build a wall and get Mexico
to pay for ité Well, his new promise is to shut down the US Govt if US
taxpayers do not pay for the wall. Am sure Houstonians will be just trilled
with this infrastructure message when he arrives there.
