Guess you are forgetting the fact that India was only the 2nd country in the world, to have a woman as Prime Minister, in Indira Gandhi!!!
The two others during the same time frame were Sirimao Bandaranaike (1960) and Golda Meir (1969). Having a woman PM in 1966 was more of pride for India, than having a rather inept person in the form of Pratibha Patil, as President of India! Installation of a woman as Defence Minister now, should not be anything exceptional. She is breaking into main male domain as far as India is concerned. It was Sonia Gandhi who made the first woman speaker of Lokh Sabha and then installed woman President with great fanfare. The BJP had to do something similar, spectacular to be seen in the same mould ,if not diffeferent There are women defence Ministers in Germany, Italy, France, Norway Denmark, sweeden, Croatia,Ecuador, Philiphines, Australia, Brazil. Canada, Columbia, etc So our Indian defence Minsiter will have comfortable company outside It does matter in male dominated Indian culture, how woman defence Minister will be accepted with hurt pride of men It is argued that Indian defence Ministry is micromanaged by PMO and Finance Minsitry We have seen recently that many defence decisions are taken by PMO without even the defece Minister accompanying as a part of delegation
