Today we bid our final farewell to Gabriel Almeida who left us so suddenly and under very tragic circumstances.
Margao based 52 year old Gabriel Almeida was a very knowledgeable Assistant Public Prosecutor. He would always function strictly within the parameters of law and would never succumb to the pulls and pressures of the Powers to be. He was very well read and was always thorough in law while being blunt in making his submissions. This is possibly why he was sidelined in his department, the Directorate of Prosecution. Gabriel Almeida had a personality of his own and always spoke out his mind never mincing words in what he had to communicate inside and outside the Court. Relatively very low profile, he was possibly the only Prosecutor in Goa without a mobile phone. He used to call me occasionally from his residential landline expressing disgust at how the entire system was collapsing. He used to always urge me to continue fighting against the high and mighty and those conversations with him shall always linger within me with nostalgic memories. Gabriel Almeida was very extremely attached to his mother who passed away on 2nd September. Within minutes of her death, shocked in grief Gabriel Almeida decided to end his life and accompany his dear mother on her final voyage. His sudden death has come as a great shock. While bidding Gabriel goodbye, May the Almighty grant his and his dear departed mother’s soul eternal peace.
