Thank you, Stanley Dempo College shock Rosary to enter RFYS final Panaji, Nov 8: Srinivassa Sinai Dempo College of Commerce and Economics came up with a compact display to upset defending champions and national runners-up Rosary College of Commerce and Arts 8-7 via the sudden-death after the teams failed to break the dead-lock (3-3) in regulation time and the tie-breaker (3-3) to be tied 6-6 until the sudden-death was introduced. Dempo held their nerves in the sudden-death and prevailed 2-1 for an overall score of 8-7 in the college boys semi-finals of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports Boys Football tournament at the Tilak Maidan ground, Vasco here on Wednesday. Dempo played a more compact game with free-flowing passing and build-ups that had the rivals on the backfoot. They settled into a rhythm and moved into the driver’s seat soon after the kick-off, refusing to let Rosary to settle into their groove. That seemed to upset their rhythm which Dempo took advantage of and sneaked into the lead in the 13th minute. Boosted by the one-goal advantage, Dempo continued to mount pressure on the rival citadel with attacks from the flanks and down the middle. Seven minutes later, Dion Fernandes got into the act, beating Rosary goalkeeper Ozen Silva in the 20th minute to drive home the advantage as Dempo went into the lemon break with a comfortable 2-0 lead. They resumed their domination on resumption with the defence putting up a stout-hearted performance but somewhere down the line they took their foot off the gas and allowed Rosary come back into the game with two strikes within a span of three minutes through Joston Fernandes and Aaron D’Silva in the 40th and 43rd minutes respectively. They regrouped after the double reverse and somehow once again snatched the lead in the 57th minute through Devendra only to see Rosary bounce back. They staged a grand fight back putting the Dempo defence under tremendous pressure with Aaron D’Silva pulling strings with flair from the middle of the park, harnessing the strikers and his fellow midfielders with fluency. Just when Dempo scented victory Clive Miranda threw Rosary a lifeline slipping the ball into the net in the 79th minute to take the game into the tie-breaker. Dempo’s players held their nerves in the tie-breaker and scored through Salu Santos, Aaron D’Silva, Latish Kunkolikar ,Devendra and Chetan Vernekar while Rosary got their goals through Joven, Lenny Fernandes, Sneden Medeira and Clive Costa. In the girls semi-finals, Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim packed too many guns for Our Lady of Rosary Higher Secondary School, Dona Paula who seemed to match their opponents attack for attack as they fought tooth and nail in the first half. In fact each time Rosary HSS took the lead, Our Lady of Rosary levelled scores immediately until the scores were 2-2 midway through. But once the Navelim side struck two more before going into the lemon break for a comfortable 4-2 lead, the writing was on the wall. The South Goa school pumped in two more goals after the cross over and conceded just once towards the dying stages to troop out 6-3 winners. Striker Somaaya Nadia Mukundan was the star performer for Rosary, finishing off with a hat-trick while Fevina Costa was not far behind as she completed a brace for the winners. Rosary HSS set up a title clash with Regina Martyrum High School, who downed St Xavier's Higher Secondary School 4-3 via tie-breaker in the other semi-final. After a barren first half, Regina took the lead with Suveda Kokate's 21st minute strike but St Xavier's struck back five minutes later through Khushboo Saundatikar and the scoreline remained 1-1 until the end of regulation time. In the penalty shootout, the Regina girls' held their nerve to book a berth in the final. In the girls second semifinals, Regina Martyrum High School, Chicalim, overcame a stiff challenge from St. Xavier's Higher Secondary School, Mapusa 4-3 via the sudden-death after the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time and 3-3 at the end of the tie-breaker.
