RISE IN VIOLATION OF TRAFFIC RULES
Regardless of the Supreme Court orders and government trying to enforce
stricter traffic controls, it is reported that the State sees a 60% increase in
traffic violations! The capacity to govern is challenged when the State comes
into conflict with some collective or vested interests. For example the taxi
unions have been refusing to install speed governors or meters, and the
government has let them hold people/tourists to ransom by not permitting
private/OLA cabs and generally bowing to their dictating terms with impunity so
far! Governments are permitting people become lawless due vote bank politics.
Like taxi drivers, people are also taking advantage of this to carry on as
usual. I am fed up of yelling at violaters as a pedestrian who cannot cross at
the Zebra or be able to drive in safety! The police must know why their
efforts are not working when they come one or a couple of days and whistle/
enforce discipline and then go away and it is back to square one! I see
educated respected people using mobiles whilst driving and following the herd!
I suggest shaming them by putting names of people breaking traffic rules and
area where they come from, in the media. Also the bandobust at a place should
be carried on relentlessly at different places on the same road for at least a
month continuously. At least those people will be fined, liscence/ vehicle
confiscated for repeat offences and shamed. As news spreads, violaters will be
inconvenienced, get the habit and some fear of breaking the rules and
endangering their and peoples lives! The PWD must clearly paint and light up
stop lines, Zebra crossings, speed breaker and other traffic signs. Politicians
must stay out of any medling in this matter strictly. CM must publicly caution
all politicians again, warn all public again and show that this time he means
business, and once again assure traffic police of no interference. Changing old
habits and mindsets is not easy in our country.
