The tithe was an obligatory offering from the law of Moses requiring 10 percent of an Israelite's firstfruits. Abel offered the best of his produce which found favour with God. Abraham did not withhold offering God his only son Isaac. The Israelites offered the best of their first fruits in God's temple. Tithing is a Matter of the Heart. Matthew 6:21 says "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." It shows that our heart isn't tied to our money and that we love God more than our money. In Mark 12:41-44 , Our Lord says that the poor widow put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on." She gave cheerfully for the glory of God.
Except a handful few, most of us have forgotten our commitment to God and to his glory. We are not compelled to contribute but are welcome to give lovingly. Many of us are blessed in different ways and many more are less fortunate. Very disheartening to know that some of our brethren drop bus tickets whilst contributing during collections! Some drop coins which are out of circulation. Whereas some look the other way and ignore. But there are also God's children who wholeheartedly contribute generously. They thank God for their blessings and lovingly share with their less fortunate brethren. Malachi 3: 10 - Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, That there may be food in my house. Put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, And see if I do not open the floodgates of heaven for you, and pour down upon you blessing without measure! Let us store treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.
