In western democratic countries where no physical torture is used to extract
confessions, the police rely solely on verbal and psychological skills to get
information to establish your guilt or to even use in court.

This video is a very skillful representation of how the police interrogate.

The moment you ask for a lawyer, they have to stop questioning you alone. When
you request counsel, they will make you feel that you are guilty and hence
asking for a lawyer and say they will no longer help you get a break with the
public prosecutor, but remember without your lawyer you may innocently give
information they may use to frame you, in the interest of winding up the case,
even if you are not guilty. If you are guilty, there is no reason you must do
their job for them since it’s their responsibility to build a case against you.

Hope this helps in the unlikely event you are taken into custody.
