GOACAN will observe World Water Day on 22nd March with a consumer awareness action in Cuncolim as part of its ongoing Consumer Literacy Campaign. GOACAN will organise the Consumer Awareness Action in collaboration with the volunteers of the Cuncolim Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF). During the daylong program Forum volunteers will visit the wells of consumers in Cuncolim to create awareness about their rights and responsibilities in the context of the implementation of the Goa Ground Water Regulation Act 2002 and schemes of the Water Resources Department on Protection of Wells and Rainwater Harvesting. >From 2015 GOACAN has been observing World Water Day along with the Consumer Forum volunteers by conducting awareness actions in villages under Panchayat jurisdiction like Siolim in Bardez, Avedem in Quepem and Velim in Salcete Taluka. This year the emphasis is to create an awareness with an urban focus by covering Municipal areas where in wells are facing a greater threat of neglect and pollution. As 22nd March will also see the launch of the International Decade of Action on Water 2018 - 2028 with the focus being Water for Sustainable Development, GOACAN will initiate a state wide discussion on the water needs of Goa as an international tourist destination. With tourist arrivals likely to reach one crore twenty lakhs in the next few years, the waters needs of consumers will have to be addressed by exploring nature-based solutions. GOACAN will encourage discussions at the forthcoming Gram Sabha meeting by mobilising Consumer Forums, Self Help Groups and Panchayat Bio-diversity Committees amongst others to address the water needs of the village in their Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP). ------ ---------------------------------
