In addition, I do not understand why Carmo has this pathological
hatred towards Goan seamen.

His own father was a ship's steward slogging away on the high seas so
that his family could have a half-decent living. No doubt it was due
to the many hours of toil and lonely months spent away from his family
that allowed Carmo to pursue his education.

If I were Carmo, I would have lit a candle to the patron saint of
Travottis in gratitude  for enabling him to get where he is.

If you don't know where you come from, you'll never know where you're
going to - I always maintain. And Carmo had proved it in spades.
