Hello Mr. P De Souza

Hazar questions about Goan Cazar

Arre baba, thank you 1000 times for taking this cazar info from my article "Cazar in Goa", which in turn was extracted from my novel, “The Sixth Night”.

I, for one, really don’t know the real answers to your questions and I am sorry for wasting your valuable time, but sorro has asked me to write to you.

I think the ross, coconut milk signifies purity(as in virgin) or it could have been employed to make your body immune to future intakes of unlimited doses of future cholesterol.

As regards ‘Portonnem” which also colloquially means a Cashtty in Saxxti (potonnem) , I have no real answer either. But if you go somewhere forward, you have to come backward. What goes up, must come down to celebrate. It also probably comes from the Hindu traditions. Remember both are equal partners. But who the hell cares if we get two treats for the price of one? Also those days you could get free transport by caminhao to another village at night time celebrating and singing Tambdde Rosa tuje polle and other mandde, sitting next to lovely dames, and some people sitting manddier too. There were no cops to check the capacity in this khotaro of a carreira .

About Chuddo and maternal uncle? Again, don’t know why! Probably paternal ancol went on the ship.

These are traditions Baba!
Don’t know who initiated them. May be some Zanntto Xanno named Traditiono Fernandes or Goenkar Chali! May be GU (Goa University) should do a study on this history lesson of our traditions.
Just enjoy murre! Don’t worry! Be Happy!
Enjoy the Hazar Rupia zoti (dote) ani mudi ani dennem!

Thanks!
Hope someone gives you the real answers!Ragar zainakam!
Viva! Okol Oroit in Saxtti! Viva means long live, no divorce, ok?

NB,
Hi Fred!
I just noticed you sign Frederki Noronha in Devanagari script after your Post title. Are my eyes playing a trick or someone wrote it wrong in Devanagari script?
For me it reads “ Frederki Noronha”
Devnagari Readers can you see this or am I wrong as usual?
Or is it like “ My mistake u r wrongu?”
Shouldn’t it be Frede- ri – k rather than r-ki?

Thanks to all who have responded and also suggested some information sources.

I thought of sharing some findings and also airing some Qs with the hope of gaining some insights:

CHUDDO
The girl has to go to her maternal uncle's house (mamaguer) where she drinks water from the well and her uncle offers her chuddo, a bunch of multi-coloured glass bangles on her both hands, a sign that she is now engaged.

Why the maternal uncle?. What is the significance of drinking water from the well?

ROSS
A ceremony to bathe the bride/groom with coconut milk, in unison with the singing of verses in Konkanni in praise of the bride/groom and their relatives.

What does coconut milk signify?

PORTONNEM
On the next day, the wedding shifts to the bride's place. Same scenario, may be little less festive with a simple Ladainha for those who are poor, otherwise it's double celebration. The wedding is now really over, but relatives are still there and will be there till all sorpatel and mass (meat) and attoiloli coddi(dried curry) is over, some two weeks after the wedding.

Is there some more meaning associated with the custom of going to the bride's place on the next day?
or is it just to finish the left overs?
