From: Frederick Noronha
The Goan community across the globe is scattered and out-of-touch with one
another. Everyone is busy with the struggle of their own lives. For whatever
reason, the hub that Goa should have been for its diaspora is not playing its
role. (The NRI Commission is in a state of deep comatose, whether it's the
Congress or the BJP in power here. The Diaspora Studies Chair that was set up
at the GU is non-functional too.)
As a discussion on the Goa-Book-Club pointed out recently, the earlier cultural
hubs that existed in Dhobitalao or Nairobi, Uganda, Entebbe or Dar-es-Salaam
are now scattered in many places. I won't go into the critique of Goan
communities being more interested in food and dance (in part because the same
is true of us Goans in Goa too). But, from the sidelines of cyberspace, I know
that a few expats (and John Nazareth is among them) have been working hard to
build the links among various diaspora groups. Let me take this opportunity to
share just one of his
write-ups:https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/moira-net/lcQu0M3bpqE
