For lack of jobs, more than 50,000 graduates, 28,000 post-graduates and 3,700 PhD holders have applied for 62 posts of messengers in UP's police department. The post of messenger requires just passing Class V & the ability to ride a bicycle. The full-time government post has a starting pay of Rs 20,000 per month.

In Tamil Nadu, 992 PhD holders and 23,000 MPhil holders were among 2 million applicants to a village-level clerk job test held in February 2018. The minimum requirement was passing Class X.

In West Bengal, 70 peon posts in April 2018 attracted more than 11,000 applicants, several of them with PhD, MSc, MTech, BTech and BSc degrees. The minimum requirement was Class 8 and the pay is Rs 15,000 per month.

Indian Railways, the single largest employer in the country, announced 100,000 vacancies earlier this year. More than 20 million applied for them, including thousands of PhDs.

- PhDs, MPhils etc [names all taken from UK academies] may be applying for lowly jobs but what of the quality of the degrees awarded? Can they be compared with UK or East Asia? And how original are the theses? Is there more than a whiff of plagiarism in some?
