The Wai. Thais wai each other. They greet one another by bringing the palms together close to the chest. Depending on who you are in society, the head is dipped a little or more while you say “ Sawadee krap” (male speaker) or “sawadee kha”(female) with a lowering of the tone in each case. It’s fun to be doing this all day. And it puts all in a good mood. I saw these two figures of youth dressed in traditional clothes and greeting those who enter the gates at a government building in the city. St Paul recommends “Greet one another with a holy kiss”. Really? I’m sure he meant “make your greeting holy”. That’s a good thought. Let’s bring our palms together, Thai or Indian style, and transmit heart feelings of love and compassion to those we meet.
