Panji - Punnjee - Ponnje make sense, Panaji does not if you familiar with
the Semitic. I have written often of the alphabetic-syllabic divide, but trip
over it myself, as with the failure to compress as many of the initial letters
of a word as possible : think coptic Mo-ni-ca and the anglo
Moni-ca.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goa certainly has its issues in this regard. For one thing, if there is one
city name desperately crying out for relief it is the linguistic obscenity
of ‘Panaji’ which makes no sense in any language, least of all native
Konkani. Ponnje would work, and also the more anglicized Panjim, but the
status quo is purely ridiculous.
