I would submit that prayer and meditation is a contributing factor to reduce 
one's own mental stress and improve peace of mind. 
Before the atheists on Goanet get their dander up, no less an authority than 
Dalai Lama  and several  psychiatrists and psychologists tell us that prayer 
and meditation is one of several measures available to individually nurture our 
own emotional brain and reduce the risk of psycho-social problems. 
Very likely praying for someone else may have a self-help benefit; and so is 
wishing and imparting pleasant thoughts.  So once again a belated HAPPY DIWALI.
