During the First World War, the  Goan Institute Nairobi  assisted the various 
war charities by handsome contributions and by placing the Hall at the disposal 
of the Red Cross Society.

She notes:  Nearly 160 Goans received medals during WWI for their service in 
the Royal Navy.

Others are known to have served as stretcher bearers for the wounded.  Some 
returned to Goa scarred, as we now know, suffering from PTSD.
