Dear Mr. Bhandare,
The views expressed by you echo the views of a majority of the people who
have viewed the VCD.
For the amount Ramesh Deo was paid, the quality of the product [both in terms
of research and cinematography] is very poor.
The main OBJECTION was not to the making of the film, or even its exhibition
[it was telecast by Doordarshan in 2002] BUT to the COMPULSORY VIEWING by
school students on 19 December, 2004 after the Goa Liberation Day flag hoisting
at the school premises. Parrikar denies that today, but those were the
instructions given orally by the staff of the Educatiopn Department to the
Headmistresses/masters of all the schools while delivering the VCD personally.
Only one ADEI [Asst.District Education Inspector] put these instructions of the
Minister of Education [then Manohar Parrikar himself] and Director of Education
[then Ashok Desai] in writing...and paid the price for it. The poor fellow,
conveniently, was a Muslim.
Those who would like to discuss on this thread would do well to read the
archives fo Goanet on the topic of VCD beginning with my posting on 18
December, 2004 afternoon. The archives of Navhind Times during the period 20
Dec.2004 to 31 January 2005 also contains researched articles by Mario Cabral e
Sa. I do not know if archives of Herald and GT for the period are available.
A reading of the History text book of Std.V [pub. by SIE, Govt. of Goa]and
the book "INSIDE GOA" by Manohar Moolgaocar [first Edition pub. by Govt. of
Goa, second ed. by Architects Autonomous] will also tell you how the VCD is
different form the accepted history of Goa's freedom struggle.
Public memory cannot be so short. "Those who do not remember their history
are condemned to repeat it." wrote Leon Uris. That is true. Timmaji pulled a
fast one on Goa. Afonso de Albuquerque pulled a fast one on Timmaji. Parrikar
tried to pull a fast one on Goa....and see where he has reached! The VCD has
been the beginning of his end. No one will trust him anymore. If someone trusts
him after all that he has done, s/he will live to regret it. There is no other
way. I have not learnt this the easy way, either, but I am happy to have
contributed to saving a majority of the Rain Trees on DB Road [some I have seen
being pulled down in the dead of the night in Sept.-Oct 2004 before IFFI] and
in preventing the VCD from being shown to school students on 19 December, 2004.
Others played their role in achieving the fall of the BJP-led Government in
January, 2005...a thing that Parrikar will not get to forget in a hurry. Let
him curse his VHP advisors if he wants but he had to pay
the price...and is still paying it, with compound interest.

Thanks JoeGoaUK for the link I had heard about the VCD
a lot but never seen it.
My personal opinion is that the film was a bit crude
when depicting historical events and not completely
unbiased like Aristo mentioned
It should have shed light on the facts that hindus
invited the portuguese to deliver them from the
muslims and how a section of local hindus collaborated
with the enemy.
