Mr Martin Cristovam Pereira

                                                                Master of
simplification
He was born to Mr Largos/Mrs Venoziana Pereira at Deussua Chinchinim on 27
October 1940 .They were a family of 4 brothers and a sister. Undoubtedly he was
a star in the family and guiding beacon of light. He had his early Education in
Portuguese and after his SSCE from St Bosco`s H School,,and graduated in
Bachelor of Science from St Xavier`s College, Bombay University. He qualified
as a professional Teacher educator from Nirmala Institute of Education,
Panjim in 1968
For a brief period he served as a medical representative before embracing his
calling as a Educator. His experience in Building and construction Industry
enabled him to offer free his expertise in estimation of completed works, His
first stint as a teacher was at St Bosco`s and he finally moved over to
Mount Mary`s High School Chinchinim, where from he retired as its Headmaster.
His professional career was of fulfillment and complete satisfaction
He rightly earned the title" Master of Simplification".Mathematics a difficult
subject ,requiring special ability was a compulsory subject. The failures and
aversion to the subjects was a challenge he countered with his special
knowledge, engaging student without force, inspiring them with motivation,
upgrading continuously his skills through orientation courses with emphasis on
content and student .Mathematics teachers are not among the most popular with
students, but he succeeded in carving a niche for himself in the hearts and
lives of knowledge seekers , His private classes were immensely successful
because of proven results. He was not selective in enrollment but produced
winners out of ordinary students by enticing them to love mathematics .He
thereby took a hand, opened a mind and touched a heart as a teacher of
Mathematics
His passionate interest in soccer and cricket influenced students and
encouraged them to participate in sports and academics as well,His soft
corner for sportsmen at promotions was not his weakness but a belief. He would
accompany students on sports field to encourage and cheer them. He polished his
skills in compering school and social functions He was much sought after as
the Toast-Master on numerous, special occasions, an opportunity he relished
very much. He always remained deeply religious and spiritual person
His social commitment on ward Chapel committee was exemplary and praise worthy
.Little is public knowledge of his skills a s a master chef
He had to battle many a medical ailment with a spirit of determination and
courage. Martin as a teacher and Headmaster dedicated himself with a clear
vision for future He was punctual, calculated , methodical and competent He
painstakingly raised resources to improve school physical environment and aid
the needy and marginalised section of the society and also protected legitimate
the interests of the staff members
Abdul Kalam said " if people remember me as good teacher that will be the
greatest honour" Martin is remembered, will be remembered, will always be
remembered as a candle that consumes itself to spread light and dispel
darkness His motto was that he can only make the students think, believe in
their abilities and accentuate their self image by awakening their own
expectations
Martin was excited and happy about the academic achievements and professional
placement of his daughters, who were rank holders in public examination .The
grandchildren had very special, caring relationship with him and which he
cherished. He proudly mentioned the love and concern by his daughters and son-
in- laws and their being well placed and settled in life.. Wenefrida always
stood shoulder to shoulder with him at all times and was a great comfort.
Martin was cool and clam, well prepared, and knowing that his end is near and
certain even wrote his won obituary with direction for funeral rites,, a rare
exercise of courage

Martin was my colleague at St Xavier`s Bombay, Nirmala, Institute of Education
Panjim and Mount Mary`s H S Chinchinim The relationship at Bombay and Goa
helped to tide over many personal crisis during student days. When I penned
verses as a gift on his birthday, he was overjoyed
The vacuum of emptiness on his departure on 25 Nov 2018 is filled by
expressing my sentiments in his fond and everlasting memory
