Failing-an-exam suicides are common in India’s big cities but this instance of
a young girl, a doctor to boot, committing suicide because she was not prepared
for her MS (Master of Surgery) is rare.

I have always felt that young people in India are academically accomplished but
mentally undeveloped and insecure. Most of the responsibility for this can be
laid to blame at the parents’ door for treating them like children instead of
adults. It sickens me when I see this.

The rebellious ones will opt for poor peer company, go on to substance abuse
and possibly go off the rails in their careers but the timid, obedient ones end
up with mental problems and suicidal tendencies later in life.

In Canada, there are many immigrant parents that must be putting their children
under the same pressures as parents in India, but thanks to the social
environment at school and work, there is a lot of counterbalance that keeps
pressured youngsters on an even keel.

I look forward to the day when Indian parents learn to treat their children
more maturely. This will in turn cause them to behave more responsibly.
