Melville was a through and through Anglo-Indian as I have read from several
Anglo-Indian books and newsletters over the years.

Strange that with the definition of Anglo-Indian being ‘a descendant of a
British father from patrilineal lineage’ that Rosarios, D’Costas, Fernandes and
the like should be counted among Anglo-Indians.

Talking of D’Costas, in my teen years while admitted to St George’s Hospital in
Bombay, there was a young Anglo-Indian head nurse, Patricia D’Costa who was the
nurse supervisor in the ward.

Now Patricia was so pretty that she would have walked off with any beauty
competition crown (in my opinion). She was known to be very strict with ward
nurses and staff, but always spoke sweetly with me. That was enough to send a
testosterone loaded teen in raptures. I wished for a long stay in that hospital
because of Matron D’Costa, but was discharged sooner than I would have
preferred, because the Goan Chief Surgeon, another D’Costa gave me the unwanted
clearance.

Melville De Mellow was a premier broadcaster of India. I myself first heard
him on AIR in the nineteensixties. I don’t whether he was an Anglo Indian or a
Goan or East Indian orMangalorean. He sounded quite like an Englishman to me!
An articleconcerning his widow recently caught my eye. Since it involves Goan
MP MrShantaram Naik I share it with you, aswell as the Wikipedia piece on him.
