Bring on the words, bring on the world!

The World English Scrabble Players' Association (WESPA) Championships is
scheduled to be held at the Peddem Indoor stadium in Goa (www.wespacgoa,com)
between October 15th and 20th.  With over 350 participants from 56 countries,
its the largest event of its kind. Promoted by the Scrabble Association of
India and by Singapore-based Goan Charles Carneiro's Qi at work consulting, the
event will see the world's top rated players slug it out for top honours.
Likened to a combination of  bridge and chess, Scrabble is played by over 100
million people worldwide and is now poised to follow the same path as all
three, in terms of popularity as a competitive sport internationally,
attracting a largely well-educated profile of individuals. They range from
businessmen to computer programmers, NASA scientists, doctors, educators,
consultants, actors, journalists and diplomats.
In addition to the main tournament there will a multi-division open tournament,
an all India’s schools tournament, a corporate challenge and a first ever
“computers v/s players” segment.  Seven Indian resident players and several
NRIs are eligible to play the main tournament. An additional 120-150 Indian
resident players are expected to compete in the side tournaments and several
thousand actively follow the tournament.  Scrabble is at an interesting
inflection point akin to chess in the early 80s and this tournament aims at
providing it the impetus it needs.
