Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda derail St Anthony SC Assolda

CHANDOR: Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda edged past St Anthony SC Assolda 4-3 via the tie-breaker to march to the semi-finals of 15th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup, organised by Guirdolim Club and played at Chandor Church ground, on Wednesday. The match began with both teams showing attacking intent and it was Fatorda who had the chance to take the lead as early as the 4th minute but Minguel Barreto's power-packed shot ricochet off the crossbar. The Fatorda lads were all over Assolda in the first 10 minutes of play. Taking advantage of a counter-attack, Succour Fernandes of Assolda floated the ball to Kevin Vaz in the 11th minute but much to the dismay of the large gathering of Assolda supporters he ballooned over with only the rival keeper to beat. By now both teams were attacking each other but brilliant goalkeeping by both the keepers made sure the score remained 0-0. Just at the stroke of half time a corner kick taken by Fatorda’s Cliff Barreto was chested down by Minguel Barreto in the path of Alfred Noronha who had only the Assolda keeper to beat but he shot straight at the keepers legs. Changing over, both the teams played end to end football but either the keepers were brilliant or the strikers were wasteful for both the teams. In the dying minutes Minguel Barreto had a golden opportunity to seal the match for Don Bosco Fatorda when he found himself with clear sight of goal but he delayed taking the shot and was tackled by the Assolda defenders. The match thus ended 0-0 at regulation time. In the ensuing tie-breaker, Melvan, Valito, Ashley and Simon Edgar scored for Fatorda while only Kevin, Vicky and Doigo were on target for Assolda. Swizel Pereira, keeper of Fatorda saved 2 penalty kicks. Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda will now meet Dicarpale Sports Club in the semi-final on February 9.
