One possible reason for the traffic jams along the Highway from Porvorim to Margao was the random road widening at various places along the route. Whenever space was available some road widening was undertaken. So a single lane turned into a multiple one in the section where the widening occured, but returned, sooner or later, to it's single lane status. At the best of times as many four, three and two wheeler vehicles try to squeeze into a single lane. So from supposed to having a single car occupying in the width of the road you had three or four cars in the widened section and all these having to squeeze back into a car per the road width later on. This was a cause of the clog-ups snd the solution costed millions of rupees in the construction of the new flyover/bridge system along the highway. Now at the Porvorim end of the new Flyover cum Bridge, just before reaching the new construction there is a straightforward bifurcation for the traffic wanting to proceed straight over the new edifice or to that that has to turn left to head for Panjim via the two older bridges. But there was some small stretch of land available just after this bifurcation. This has now been used to construct another slipway road to head left to Panjim. So one can either turn left at the main bifurcation or wait a few seconds and turn left at the new slip road, hopefully not crashing into the vehicles that have already turned left a few seconds earlier at the main bifurcation!
