In the recently held Assembly elections, Goans might
have braved the rains and queued in large numbers but
there seems to have been no consistency in the pattern
of voting.
In constituencies like Panaji, Mapusa and Siolim the
unlimited flow of cash and liquor was unable to sway
the voters whereas in places like Aldona, Cortalim,
and Quepem it was the deciding factor.
At Sanvordem, Priol and Cumbarjua where candidates
personally supervised the distribution of money and
goodies, it did work. Jennifer Monseratte might have
had a chance if she had done it herself and not relied
on agents and power brokers who did not pass on the
money to the voters but helped themselves to the kitty
that will last them for life.
Muscle power did not work in Poinguinim and Sanguem
but had the deterrent effect in Valpoi, St Andre and
Cuncolim.
The electorate of Navelim, one of Goas most
developed constituency, decided that they had enough
of Luizinho Faleiro but on the other hand Goas most
undeveloped and neglected Santa Cruz decided to give
Victoria Fernandes yet another chance after facing
sheer neglect of the area for over a decade.
Wasnt Pandit Nehru very right in saying Goa ke log
ajeeb hain. Truly strange, arent we?
