*Out of Context - The Book Club* invites you to a book reading and discussion on the Sahitya Academy winning novel, *Karmelin* by Goan writer *Damodar Mauzo*.
The novel follows the fortunes of its eponymous heroine from Goa to Kuwait. Karmelin is orphaned in childhood and raised by relatives, has her first taste of love and betrayal, drifts into a loveless marriage to a wastrel and reduced to abject poverty. But Karmelin will do anything for her daughter; even risk her reputation by working as a maid in Kuwait where she faces sexual exploitation. Karmelin bears everything with fortitude, determined to leave her daughter untainted. The story is full of dichotomies one that Indians and Goans in particular can relate to. This is nevertheless a novel with global appeal, in a world where ordinary women are still exploited, and feminism is only paid lip service despite social and political gesturing. Does Karmelin succeed in building a dream life for her daughter, or does life have other plans? Find out! And also meet the author!
