AZAD MAIDAN HOMELESS MEN HOME STEPHEN DIAS DONA PAULA
The Azad Maidan before its renovation was undertaken had an impressive cast iron fence which do not get corroded. I had then impressed upon a very senior and responsible officer from GSIDC not to remove these antique cast iron fences because it was secure and of heritage value. However, my plea went in vain and a new concrete wall was built. From the photographs that I have clicked on 22nd June 2019 it is observed that homeless persons use the walls to sleep thus making this famous landmark to lose its old world charm. Not only is this famous congragreting ground encircled by homeless people but also inside vragrants make it their home and spoil the beauty of this marvellous Maidan. Also, these people have spoiled the lawns and liquor bottles are strewn all around the maidan, day and night which is not even cleared by civic authorities ( CCP) on a regular basis and also inside the dome the scene is much terrible by regular drunkards. The authorities concerned have to see to it that this meeting place should not be inhabited by homeless men. The Police station is just across the road to this Maidan and therefore maintaining round the clock vigil should not be a problem at all. Hopefully our new MLA Babush Monserrate does its review and reinstall them if they are still available with GSIDC so as the homeless men do not get a place to sleep on these railings. I hope that my having pointed out this sorry state of affairs will not go on deaf ears. The nearby residents have described me that the earlier version of cast iron railings should not have been removed and hopefully have not been destroyed because they are been fabricated during earlier regime.
