*Out of Context - The Book Club* invites you to a book reading and discussion on the *Perumal Murugam’s *novel *One Part Woman*.
Set deep in British colonial South India, this novel originally in Tamil, tells the poignant story of Kali and Poona who cannot conceive in spite of 12 years of marriage. Kali and Poona have tried everything under the sun, from medicines to rituals. Though they share a loving and sexually fulfilling relationship, the taunts and jeers of society become unbearable. Their families finally conspire against them and hatch a drastic plot, one that threatens the very fabric of their marriage. Poona is sent to the annual chariot festival of the God Maadhorubaagan, who is one part woman and one part man, where rules of engagement are relaxed and consenting adults are allowed to have sex. A theme that resonates even now in modern India, One Part Woman is a powerful exploration of marriage, desire, love and society’s expectations from a married couple.
