*Out-of-Context - The Book Club*, invites you to a book reading and discussion of *Colleen McCullough's* novel *The Thorn Birds*.
The novel set in the early 20th century, on Drogheda a sheep station in the Australian Outback is a story of the ill fated love story between Meggie Cleary and an ambitious Roman Catholic priest Father Ralph De Bricassart. Ralph must choose between the woman he loves and his vows. Ralph’s ambition of rising in the church hierarchy wins and he becomes a Cardinal eventually. Ralph is completely clueless about the fact that the bright young man Dane, under his mentorship is his son. Dane dies tragically and Meggie must choose between her own comfort and the independence of her actress daughter, Justine. The novel underscores the theme of relegating women to subordinate roles and exclusion from men's worlds. What is Meggie’s fate in the end? Do come for the reading to find out.
