TNN PANAJI: After several failed attempts to dispose off the carcass of a 7-meter long whale, South Goa collector Ajit Roy has called for an urgent meeting of various agencies including health, fisheries and Indian Navy on Monday to find a solution. A navy spokesperson said that state government departments and the Indian Navy were working in tandem to remove the carcass as quickly as possible and were even exploring the possibility of cutting up the decomposed whale into smaller pieces for easier burial. The dwarf sperm whale washed ashore on September 9, but nearly two weeks later it remains on the beach, which is in close proximity to Goa International Airport. Birds attracted by the decaying flesh could pose a risk to aircraft operating out of the airport. “The disposal of a rotting whale carcass at Bimbel beach, is being addressed by state agencies such as the health, fisheries, forest and tourism departments. The Indian Navy at Goa was also approached by the health officer - Vasco for assistance in disposing the whale carcass,” said the navy spokesperson. INS Hansa, the naval base, lacks expertise in handling washed up carcasses but it made an attempt to dispose of the 7-meter-long carcass weighing about 1000 kgs, on 15 and 20 September. The efforts proved unsuccessful. On September 11 and 17, personnel from the forest, labour and fisheries departments of Goa tried to burn and bury the carcass, but this too proved futile.
