SUSEGAD ATTITUDE OF GOANS? Stephen Dias, Dona Paula
It is well known fact the soaring prices of onions have skyrocketed in the state was due to excessive rain this year and the crop is affected tremendously inspite of all the affords made by the farmers for cultivating it. It so happen that our Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has categorically declined to provide surplus subsidy to counter the onion price rise by blaming people having stopped cultivating onions and rice in their fields or at their backyard and not the rain. Instead of helping them, he seeks the word " susegado" or relaxed attitude of Goans thus declining subsidy or financial benefits. Goans are well known all over the world that we are SUSEGAD in nature which does not mean a subsidy can be stopped for the sky high onions which reached almost Rs 160/- per kilo in many parts of Goa. It is true that most of our Goan families used to grow in their fields but the quantity of produce is not just sufficient and needs to depend on outside sources but if subsidy is curtailed or stopped where they will go to knock the doors of our neighboring states? Whatever the Government released about 15 crores to Goa State Horticulture corporation in a bid to bring down the price is well and good, otherwise it would have shot up even more than double of this existing price.
