Her most recent book Whitewalling: Art, Race, and Protest in 3 Acts (Badlands Unlimited 2018) was named one of the best art books of 2018 by the New York Times. 5:00 pm: Introduction - Amruta Patil Writer-painter Amruta Patil is the author of graphic novels Kari (2008); the Mahabharat and Purana-based Parva duology, Adi Parva: Churning of the Ocean (2012) and Sauptik: Blood and Flowers (2016); and Aranyaka: Book of the Forest (2019). Her Serendipity Arts Festival 2019, entitled Altar, is also her exhibition debut, as well as a profound homecoming because she was raised and went to school and art college in Goa. 18th December / Wednesday 4:00 pm: Introduction - Sergio Santimano Sergio Santimano was born in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Mozambique in 1956 and works in documentary and reportage photography. He is widely regarded one of the major photographers and artists from his generation in East Africa. Some years ago, he began to re-engage with his ancestral roots in Goa, which is the subject of his Serendipity Arts Festival 2019 exhibition: O Retorno (The Return) 5:00 pm: Introduction - Antonio E Costa Antonio E Costa is an extraordinary transnational artist who has lived, painted, and exhibited to great acclaim all over the world. His works in mixed media, on canvas and paper, over several decades and many periods of transition, have gained a universal reality beyond their visual presence. E Costa’s training in fine arts, architecture and urban design, has widened the scope of his vision to encompass environmental design and woodwork in many countries. Beyond Boundaries, his Serendipity Arts Festival 2019 exhibition, marks the first major retrospective of this supremely skilled abstract artist and sculptor. 19th December / Thursday The Liberation Dialogues 11:00 am: Itinerant Sex: Goa’s Other Worlds - Anjali Arondekar This talk engages the emergence of a devadasi collectivity in colonial Goa, the Gomantak Maratha Samaj, to pose two crucial questions: (1) How do histories of sexuality trouble the more routinized passages through which Goan history has been written and celebrated?
