The big noise in our august house aka the Goa Legislative Assembly was an unscheduled tiatr and free of charge, making for a lot of amusement and entertainment.
In relatively Goan cold weather especially after midnight the virtual war resembled a Bollywood box office movie hit which fortunately dispensed with the chilly darkness and gloom of the previous night. Why did our police choose to visit MLA Rohan Kaunte after midnight has all the elements of high drama. Is it because they are busy and overworked during the day? Whatever the reason, some say, it is a matter of bad timing as they could have gone earlier or waited until the rising sun came up on our sunshine state to herald a new day. Yes, it is not about MLA Rohan Khaunte. The issue is a much larger one than a small difference of personal opinion while they were in the corridors of power. It was a volatile situation waiting to happen since the ten Congress members flew over to the other political side - as a few others previously also - in the previous election but now find themselves in No Man’s Land. And, of course, many are called but few are chosen. Now the betrayers are caught in a corner with a NO EXIT sign. How to get out of the situation, they ask themselves. Maybe they will pray to God for forgiveness? I have no idea. People are already talking about the turncoat politicians as history, as people who had a past and now can look forward only to a doomed future. They made a mistake of betraying their voter’s trust the way Judas did with Jesus but unlike Jesus the public does not always forgive or forget, and this time wants them not to stand for elections again. The voices in the marketplace are ringing with the tune: no second chances for you! The public is demanding from all the Judases of betrayal - no standing for elections next time - as this is Goa’s great chance to elect fresh new faces. Will Goa get another chance again or simply die an early death from heart failure. Not even Dr Oscar will be able to diagnose and predict the ending of this case. People want new faces in politics, otherwise all protests will be only another excuse by turncoat politicians who are treacherous people and who want to make a back door entrance. The people have witnessed this tiatr again and again, betrayal after betrayal. When a politician betrays the voter who has voted for him or her, the cat is out of the bag and is ready for a political funeral, and burial. I suppose when we have to go, we have to go.
