Recalling my first visit to the Goa Raj Bhavan (Cabo Raj Niwas, as it was then known) which was in 1971 at the age of 11 to meet the then Lt. Governor Nakul Sen.
After that I have had the amazing privilege to interact with every successive Governor. It has all been a very enlightening experience and enhancement of knowledge. The post of Governor is an important constitutional post and as the Chief executive of the State has Executive, Legislative, Judicial and Financial powers amongst other discretionary powers to ensure the smooth running of a State. When the Government of the day abdicates in its duty the Governor is duty bound to step in. Goa has seen some very outstanding Governors by way of Lt Gen. J.F.R. Jacob, Dr. S.S.Sidhu and Mr. B.V. Wanchoo while we have also witnessed those from the other end of the spectrum on whom less said the better. Our current Governor Satya Pal Malik is very modest, practical and someone who believes in delivering good governance to the poorest of the poor. A gregarious personality with a robust heart who has always been a socialist. He is indeed a good listener with a very clear mind and believes in achieving results. A very caring and considerate soul he is. The no nonsense Governor Malik must be very concerned about the rampant corruption and administrative anarchy that India’s smallest State is engulfed in. The very knowledgeable and well experienced Governor Malik seems to be a person with a mind of his own and may not sign at the dotted line. A rubber stamp Governor he definitely is not. Despite having a government that has failed to deliver the needs of the people except for broken promises, let us have the hope, belief and the conviction that there is a better life, a better Goa, beyond the horizon with Governor Satya Pal Malik at the helm. That hope springs eternal.
