We are led to understand from the time we are little tykes that we are made in
the image of God.

In the next breath we are told we have “original sin”. That is followed by
being constantly told we are sinners and in urgent need of redemption.

So if you’re wondering whether it is true that we are some part godly and no
part animal, look around you during this Covid time.

I live in a part of the world that is kinder, gentler and more disciplined. Yet
the news says that toilet paper, victuals and some other supplies are sold
right out of their shelves. This is despite food and grocery titans telling us
that they will ensure there is no shortage of food and Trudeau telling us that
no Canadian will be short of money because of the results of this virus.

I can only conclude this “god” thing has been created to feed some egos. When
it comes to crunch time, we are just another animal out to survive even at the
cost of others.

We have evolved through thousands of years and as a result of being social
animals (which itself is a result of having to protect ourselves) have become
generous towards others specially the weaker among us. The need to survive has
been trumped by the desire to better ourselves.

So if you want to thank someone, it is better to appreciate the good work of
our own kind who sometimes through great sacrifices, have allowed us to improve
our circumstances.

If we have a conscience that we have taught ourselves to sometimes smother or
indeed ignore, it is not god-given. It is a product of living together and
ensuring we survive in comfort.

So in uncertain times, spend less time in prayer and more in seeking to help
those who need it. Above all, keep on smiling and be undaunted. As the ancient
Persians told us “This too shall pass”.
