The Goa Medical College at Bambolim is the State’s central health facility which has been catering to hundreds of patients from across Goa. On account of the COVID-19 Pandemic all the regular OPDs and operations at the GMC have been suspended thus causing grave inconvenience to the poor patients who cannot afford to go to private hospitals.
The authorities had enough notice of the current COVID-19 crisis, so they could have well planned in such a way so that the normal working of the much needed Goa Medical College was not disrupted. It was absolutely improper to have the isolation ward for COVID patients at the GMC. The government has belatedly roped in retired doctors in the battle against this deadly virus. Why was their expertise and guidance not sought earlier? Now the focus of the government has to be to ensure that the entire infrastructure required for dealing with COVID-19 patients is swiftly set up at an alternate location, so that the facilities at Goa Medical College can be restored to safely treat patients with other ailments. After all, we are told that people with underlying illnesses are particularly vulnerable and most at risk to the COVID-19 virus. It is therefore logical to ensure that the GMC continues to provide the much needed treatments for other ailments too as a priority. Prevention or Mitigation is better than trying to obtain a hitherto unknown cure.
