Alexander Solzhenitsyn was banished to Gulag Archipelago and won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Quepem was considered by many as the Gulag of Goa. It was and still is unwanted appendage of Salcete. Quepem was desolate and unforgiving tract of land. As it was many years ago, and still holds true today it was no joy to serve the local populace of Quepem. Many in the erstwhile Government and till today consider a transfer to Quepem as the ultimate humiliation. Bananas or no bananas the soul of Quepem will still be bananas. Abhar, Voznadik Vojem
