Getting our stranded seamen back to Goa should be the top most priority of the government. It is anguishing that it is taking so long. The sheer incompetence and inefficiency of the authorities on this crucial issue is a matter of apprehension. The government also needs to act to see that many Goans who were touring overseas and some students too who are stuck in various foreign countries are able to come back home soon. The concern of the family and friends of those unable to return is immense.
One fails to comprehend that if arrangements could be made for foreigners marooned in Goa to return to their countries, why the authorities can’t move swiftly to ensure the safe return of our Goans. We have seen how the Goa Government moves expeditiously when it wants. A case in hand is how during the lock-down a Mining company was given permission to resume its operation. It’s high time the government gets its priorities right and ensures that good governance prevails at all times and for every one. Every Goan trapped abroad needs to be allowed to quickly come home. And our seafarers now stranded in Mumbai must be rushed back to Goa after following all the laid down COVID-19 health and other protocols. Every effort must be made to protect and provide for them especially when they have no means to do so themselves. With enhanced planning, determination and urgent national and international co-operation and facilities to observe strict medical and health protocols on arrival there is no reason why the safe passage of our citizens cannot be achieved soon. But Government needs to act urgently and treat this matter as a main concern. They owe it to the concerned individuals and their families. If the Government is lacking in the planning and repatriation skills then perhaps we should learn from other countries that have successfully repatriated their citizens globally.
