A fantastic recounting of the Bombay plague in a well written article (even
mentioning Arpora as the birthplace of Dr Acacio Viegas) by a Tibetan reporter.
Here’s what amazed me:

1. The amazing brilliance and actions of Dr Acacio Viegas.

2. How Goans were in the forefront of important events those days while today’s
Goans are either morally bankrupt (chasing money) or intellectually lacking in
public service ability.

3. That the travails of Corona Virus today are quite minor in comparison to the
manner the bubonic plague hit people of the 19th century or the Spanish Flu of
the 20th.

4. That Waldemar Haffkine in Bombay discovered a vaccine for the plague,
injecting himself with it and bringing it to use within a month. For all our
medical advancement a century and a quarter later, it’s going to take us at
least 18 months for a Covid vaccine.

5. That the population of Bombay even in 1896, was almost a million - which
included a significant Goan element.
