In 1968 I was present when the statue of Afonso de Albuquerque the founder of
Goa was removed by the then MGP led by Dayananda B. Bandodcar. Its replacement
was a so called amity statue of two men one in a pudvem and another in shorts
ie to depict a Hindu and Cristao.
This in my opinion is nothing more than stereotyping of two communities, and
the actual fact with no amity in sight. Today it is time for those millennials
to make a change. Remove the statue and replace it with a multifaceted
sculpture of our seafarer Goans, the lamani street cleaners, field workers,
toddy tappers, poders, mineworkers, nurses etc.
