Francis Gouveia and Denver Dourado Rodrigues visited Sao Jose de Areal this morning to express their solidarity with Mr. Freddy Travasso, the local leader who stood up to the South Western Railway Employees involved in the illegal back filling of mud yesterday and thereafter ensured that the SWR employees and their contractors made a hasty retreat along with their heavy machinery and trucks after not being able to provide satisfactory explanation & any official documentation to support their most destructive works in Village. Goencho Ekvott has assured Mr. Freddy Travasso (and all the affected people in other villages & towns too) of their continued support in his / their just struggle against the destructive forces out to destroy the livelihood and the pristine environment of Goa. During the said inspection Goencho Ekvott came across local farmers among them Mr. Domingo who has suffered extensive damage to his paddy fields due to the run down of the slurry from the Railway construction works which has inundated their paddy fields causing them great distress and financial losses. Railways have also laid waste to their fertile land by dumping cement and associated construction raw material without even caring to take their prior permission. Goencho Ekvott condemns such illegal high handed attitude of the SWR and urges the Authorities to be more sensitive to the local people’s culture and way of life.
