It is so very unfortunate that in the midst of this raging pandemic Goa’s dashing Health Secretary Nila Mohanan has been suddenly transferred out to Delhi. Nila Mohanan has been virtually the Commander-in-Chief leading the COVID-19 battle in the State. The very hard working and ever so no-nonsense officer has led from the front.
Considering that currently the number of COVID-19 cases in Goa are mounting, the government should have been prudent in not moving her out from the battlefield at this precarious juncture. Her regular transfer may have been due but the health of our people at this stage should have been a priority. Yet another misplaced priority. Extraordinary times like the present demand extraordinary actions and continuity of purpose and the services of talented human resources like Nila Mohanan. It is only the single minded, focussed determination and experience of such talented people that will eventually help our people and state to overcome the virus. Instead the virus is probably laughing at the decision to transfer her out of the state at this crucial time. Nila Mohanan who was posted at Goa in 2014 has proved her mettle from day one. Her performance earlier as North Goa Collector was extremely remarkable. I recollect that when she had just assumed office she had to clear a file pertaining to the Comunidade of Serula regarding that illegal land grab case by a then sitting Minister. She took the pains to go through the entire Code of Comunidades which was unknown to her and made sure that she would not be misguided. That was the level of integrity and uprightness of an outstanding IAS officer Nila Mohanan that she has been. Attracting and retaining the best talent has always been a problem for this Government. Letting go of the best talent at crucial times will prove to be an even bigger problem. All the very best to you Madam.
