To exploit the new resources, a new expedition was fitted out under Pedro
Alvarez Cabral. His instructions were to persuade the Zamorin to drive out
Moors. Chance led his armadato the coast of Brazil which he claimed for
Portugal, reaching India next with six ships.  After prolonged negotiations he
was given the right to a factory in Calicut. Portugal thenbegan to claim
extraordinary rights on the sea: as Lords of the Sea, they could seize allgoods
of those on the ocean without permission. With that, Cabral seized an Arab ship
in the harbour. Nair riots ensued and the factory was destroyed. Cabral
resorted to burning of ships and massacres of crews. His bombardment of the
town made the Zamorin angry and Calicut a determined opponent of the
Portuguese.   Facing danger, Cabral sailed on to Cochin where the Rajah was
pleased to hear aboutthe quarrel with the Zamorin. He granted permissions to
trade and in him Cabral foundin Cochin an ally whose whose submissions were
going to be to be of great importanceto Portuguese power in the East. The Rajah
thought he had found allies who would helpfree him from the control of the
Zamorin.  Permission was granted to build a factory in Cochin. At the same
time, messengers arrived from Quilon and Cannanore with invitations to trade.
The Zamorin arrived at Cochin to attack with a fleet of eighty ships. Cabral
left hurriedlyfor Cannanore, loaded more cargo and sailed on to Portugal.
