It appears to be a recurring theme with Goan athletes. A number of them are
discovered early in their lives having an innate talent at a specific sport
or event. They take home all state honours, make waves at the national
level, sometimes even making a dent or two in international meets. But as
the young Goan athlete matures through adolescence into youth, they seem to
fade away not just from the sport but also from our memories.
And it is more than likely that this is not a problem unique to Goa. Many
countries that lack the necessary infrastructure to churn out (successful)
athletes also endure similar situations. Its more than likely the daunting
needs of financial security lead some of these athletes and their families
to focus their energies on academic or other avenues or maybe the athletes
do go downhill in training and performances.
