My friend recently wrote:
In destination-countries, migrants are often perceived with negative
stereotypes. They can often be blamed for the rise in crime, the
spread of disease, taking jobs away from locals, or driving down
local salaries. The media has the tendency to focus on migrants
arrested for violation of migration laws, the criminal activities of
traffickers, and the problems of integration. This all only adds to
the perception of migration as a problem-ridden issue. Policies
designed to deal with migration are, with some significant exceptions,
overwhelmingly those of control and restriction, rather than of
facilitation and accommodation.
... and as I edited his work, I thought.... how true! Sounds just like
in Goa! Of course, he wasn't talking about our context. --FN
