Dar es Salaam , the main city in the East African nation of Tanzania (formerly known as Tanganyika ) is most probably named by the Omani Arab sultans of the island of Zanzibar and who also controlled the coastal areas from Tanzania to Kenya in the late nineteen century before the arrival of German colonialists Dar es Salaam means Haven(Dar) of Peace (Salaam) and haven here means sheltering anchorage (harbour) for the prevailing sailing ships (dhows)
