Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts invites you to the virtual book release of Souza: The Artist, His Loves, & His Times, by eminent author Victor Rangel-Ribeiro, celebrating the genius, life and times of Francis Newton Souza. Souza: The Artist, His Loves, & His Times incorporates eight years of meticulous research carried out by the author. It traces the life of Souza in Goa, Bombay, London, New York and his marriages to Maria Figueiredo, Liselotte de Kristian, Barbara Zinkant and his partner Srimati Lal. It also tells the story of the friendship between the author and the artist, and includes letters exchanged with his contemporaries of that time. This event will feature a conversation between Victor Rangel-Ribeiro and Conor Macklin, Director of Grosvenor Gallery about this new book, and the life of Souza. The book will be officially released by renowned Goan artist and Padma Bhushan Awardee, Laxman Pai and a welcome address by Dattaraj V. Salgaocar, Chairman of V. M. Victor Rangel-Ribeiro (born 1925) is an Indian writer, former journalist, music conductor and editor. He is most noted as the author of Tivolem (1998), whose writing was funded by a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiction Fellowship (awarded 1991), and which was awarded the Milkweed National Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award. The author lives in New York City. Conor Macklin is the Director of Grosvenor Gallery in London and is a specialist on the works by Francis Newton Souza. He has organised several exhibitions on the artist. Including the recent traveling show Souza in the 40’s that came to Sunaparanta in December 2018. He also put together a show entitled Souza Picasso in New Delhi in 2011. Laxman Pai (born 1926) is a contemporary Indian Artist whose work is influenced by the vocabulary of Indian miniatures, traditional designs, Indian music and natural landscapes. He completed his art education from the J.J. School of Art. The artist spent a considerable portion of his career in Paris where he showed extensively. He has exhibited at major biennales and exhibitions across the world. His paintings are part of various public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, New York Public Library, Berlin Museum, Ben and Abbey Grey Foundation (USA).
