In the early 1970s while dinig at the Indian restaurant named Gaylord  in
Washington DC, the waiter who was serving us was named Gomes.  Longing to meet
fellow Goans at a time when few Goans or Indians were to be found in the USA, I
asked him if he was Goan.I was shocked when he said No, he was from
Bangladesh.Fast forward nearly 3 decades later........I was dining in another
Indian restaurant in Washington DC and sure enough the waiter was named Gomes.
I told him that I had met a waiter named Gomes three decades earlier.  He told
me that that Gomes was his Uncle and now owned a string of Indian restaurants
in Washington DC.  Quite an enterprising Gomes clan.  And that is what the USA
represents - from rags to riches, for those willing to take the plunge and work
for it - the opportunities are boundless.
