The blatant and so vicious attack on the Judiciary by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is totally misplaced, unfounded and unjustified and has to be very firmly condemned.
After targeting the judges of the Andhra high Court, Chief Minister Reddy has gone to the extent of maligning the very reputed and unamenable Supreme Court Justice N.V. Ramana who is set to be the next Chief Justice of India on this 24th April. Is the ruling party at the centre working in conjunction and in collusion with the Andhra Chief Minister to unnecessarily malign and tarnish Justice Ramana’s image? The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde himself recently stated that when a person is about to be elevated as a Judge or to some higher post, allegations surface to malign the image of such person. The current CJI cannot abdicate his Constitutional duty while continuing to be a mere spectator, as he must expeditiously and judicially firmly step in by initiating Contempt of Court proceedings against the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister for having tarnished and maligned the Judiciary and even the second Senior most and very reputed Judge of the Supreme Court. Such malicious attacks must be resolutely nipped in the bud. An attack on the judiciary is also an attack on the citizen. In a democracy, unjustified attacks on the Judiciary by politicians undermines the bedrock of our democracy which is the rule of law. It is therefore of paramount importance that we must always have an independent judiciary, with judges who can make decisions independent of the political winds that are blowing. Unscrupulous politicians with their own hidden agendas who seek to undermine the rule of law should reflect and act on the wise words of Reuven Rivlin, current President of Israel who has said “ There is no and there cannot be any situation, in which we don’t respect the law and the judiciary. It is unacceptable to attack the courts; criticism is allowed, but attacks are not. It shakes the basis of our Democracy’’.
