International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Rui, Thank you for ur civil response It is rare that someone engages in a dialogue with me without bringing the RSS into it :-) You are correct when u say that as far as certain indicators go like crime rate, cleanliness, population, pollution etc Goa was far better say 50 years back But economic progress must come at a price The way industries can flourish in Goa is only if there are migrant labors Along with them the ills like zopadpati crimes etc will also come. personally i think that we need to create more opportunities in the rural areas by investing hevaily into scientific agriculture and educating the people that agriculture need not necessarily be a loss making proposition Retail giants like Reliance are entering the produce market and the opporunities for progressive farmers and animal husbandary initiatives are tremendous I hope the govt invests heavily into check dams Otherwise in 50 years we will have massive water shortages it is a waste to see all the rainfall go into the sea The next thing on agenda should be e-governance Of course this will never happen because it runs counter to the very existence of a bloated babudom. How difficult it is for a small state like Goa to have say a mahiti ghar in each taluka from where all paperwork can be cleared using single window clearnace? As far as tourism goes we have heard a lot of ideas. I believe in sustainable eco tourism along with the kind we already have. The Sahakari spice farm is a good example. Majority of foreign tourists come to Goa because of its image as a exotic destination and free availability of narcotics The last thing is we need to woo IT companies First it was Bangalore and Chennai and Gurgaon and later Pune then cochin trivandrum and even nasik , then why not Goa? Also the infrastructure for IT isnt much compared to manufacturing But we can rest assured that none of the above will happen because people in Goa have chosen the wrong people to lead them After all if "public represantatives" spend 5 crores and up to get a chance to "serve" when and how will this seed investment be recovered?
