I always love it when I come across a new turn of phrase that makes much sense,
unlike most corporatese these days, that just string some fancy words and
phrases for adequately perfect existing descriptions.

‘Last Responders’ - now that’s a new and descriptive modern reference to the
people necessary to our lives but always in the background. They are
under-appreciated because their work reflects repugnant feelings in us, buy
hey, they are as necessary to the customs of our society as vultures (truly
sorry for that comparison) would be to rotting carrion in the savannah.

I have met a couple of them in funeral homes during visitations and on request
they were kind enough to take me to their ‘workshop’, usually in the basement
of the Funeral Parlours in which they worked. I was amazed at the neatness, the
order and the hygiene they maintained at their spacious workplaces.

All of them have undergone a mortuary science program at community colleges and
have obtained their licences to operate the dressing up, the cosmetology, the
body chemistry and the disposal methods that are essential to their work. In
addition, after those duties are over and the mourners straggle in, they
maintain a discreet presence dressed in black suits, ready if an accident
occurs due to excessive grief or pushing the coffin off its stand, posing a
risk to the body inside.

It may well be in these Covid times that out Last Responders fulfill as
important a task as our First.
